Storm Update December 18th

Good morning, the storm is progressing as projected. Deep River and the region are experiencing heavy rain and strong winds along with the threat of coastal flooding. There are power outages reported.

At this time, the western side of Deep River has the majority of the outages with others out along Main Street. Region 4 has canceled school for the day; therefore, all after school activities have been canceled as well. Currently, Deep River has about 1000 customers out.

The town’s Emergency Management team, the Deep River Public Works Department and the First Selectman's office are in continuous communication with other state and municipal leaders along with Eversource.

At 8:41 am est, doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 0.5 to 1 inch in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.  The national weather service has issued a flash flood warning for Middlesex County until 11:45 am est.

Please take precautionary/preparedness actions... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

If traveling, please avoid driving through any standing water. Do not approach any downed power lines; assume they are live wires, and call 911 to report. Eversource has added additional crews to handle any power outages due to downed trees and wires.

We are keeping an eye on things and prepared to take action if necessary.  Please stay safe. We will send updates as new information comes to light.

Carol Jones, First Selectman
