winter storm parking ban announced

Due to the inclement weather predicted for our area Saturday (1/6) evening into Sunday (1/7) morning, we are enacting a parking ban on all town roads.

The parking ban will go into effect Saturday evening beginning at 8:00pm and will end at 8:00 am Sunday morning.

While, our area is currently not expected to get a large accumulation of snow, we want to err on the side of caution, as better to be safe than sorry. We would hate to have anyone get plowed in.

The Public Works and Highway Department will be working to ensure our roads are passable, and to do so, our plows will need all roadways, including cul-de-sacs, to be cleared of vehicles. This will also aid in the safe passage of large emergency vehicles.

If you need to relocate your vehicle, the public parking lot behind the library will be open and available for parking during the storm.

A few reminders:

  • Any vehicle parked on any public roadway during the hours of the parking ban may be towed at the owner’s expense.  The operator or owner of any vehicle parked on any public roadway shall promptly remove their vehicle whenever so ordered by authorized Town personnel or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
  • The pushing of snow from private driveways into and across public streets is prohibited. This practice is dangerous and impedes the Town’s snow removal process. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of their contractors.
  • During the winter season it is inevitable that some mailboxes will fall victim to winter’s forces. Residents are reminded of the importance of proper placement and anchoring of mailboxes and support posts to prevent damage from snow removal operations. Mailboxes should be securely fastened to a sturdy post which is sufficiently anchored in the ground to resist the impact of plowed snow. If a mailbox or post is pushed over or damaged as a result of snow or slush coming off a snowplow it is considered a winter hazard. The Town will not replace the mailbox or post. If it is determined a mailbox is struck by a Town snow plow, not the snow coming off the plow, the Town will reimburse the owner for a basic support post and a basic mailbox up to seventy-five dollars ($75.00). Payment will not include costs other than materials and will not cover the cost of decorative wood or metal posts or decorative mailboxes. The Town will do it’s best to assist residents with the replacement of mailboxes deemed to have been struck by a Town snow plow as time and circumstances allow. The First Selectman or his designated representative is authorized to use reasonable discretion in resolving disputes involving unusual circumstances. Residents are responsible for keeping their mailboxes clear for mail to be delivered.
  • It is the primary goal of our public works department to ensure that town roads are passable during winter storms, which often involves drivers working long hours in hazardous conditions. We ask for your patience and cooperation during these events.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Please remember to check on your neighbors, be safe, and enjoy the snow.
